Volunteers are needed and welcomed. There are at least three ways you can volunteer.
1) Volunteers are needed as special guests who are able to teach and inform our disabled consumers. We are looking for volunteers who can come on a regular bi-monthly, monthly or quarterly schedule to enrich the lives of our developmentally disabled neighbors. Virtually any topic where you can explain and display life skills or a broader knowledge of the world would qualify.
Recent examples are Ranger Dave exploring the US Military, Elaine Keithley sharing gardening tips and planting flowers and vegetables, Elania Tillman leading an exercise class and Sheriff Barton explaining how law enforcement works and displaying the tools of the trade. The possibilities are almost endless.
2) Volunteers are needed as drivers. If you are able to help set up a carpool and/or regularly drive to Doniphan for work or other reasons you can be a volunteer driver. You would pickup disabled consumers to transport them from home to the Productive Living Center and back.
Volunteer Drivers will need to pass a simple background check, provide proof of insurance and sign a liability waiver. Drivers can also be reimbursed at the Federal volunteer mileage rate of $0.14 / mile driven with appropriate mileage logs.
3) Volunteers are needed to enrich social interaction. Simply hang out with our developmentally disabled neighbors to teach simple skills, play games and just have conversations. Our disabled folks are some of the sweetest and friendliest people you will ever meet.
For this level of involvement you will need to get a simple background check.
